Locking Your Social Security Number: Should You Do it?

Locking Your Social Security Number: Should You Do it?Find out if locking your social security number is best for you.

Keeping your personal information personal is now more important than ever. Between apps and credit card security breaches and high-tech breaches, identity thieves seem to have an almost endless supply of resources to tap into your information. If this is something that worries you, freezing (or locking) your social security number is something that you should definitely look into. Locking your social security number means that no one, not even you, will be able to use it for anything that involves the use of the number. If you can’t use it, neither can thieves.

There are some things that you can do before you freeze your social security that could immediately decrease the chances of your information being stolen by identity thieves.

  • Shred paperwork that personal information, and use different trash bins.
  • Use strong passwords on financial accounts or apps that require the use of your personal information.
  • Only type your information if the website has “https://” at the beginning of the URL. The “s” indicates a form of encryption that’s keeping your info safe.
  • Use Wi-Fi networks that are secure. Avoid typing sensitive information on public networks like those in Starbucks or public libraries.
  • Check your credit report annually, and confirm its accuracy. Any discrepancies should be reported immediately.
  • Install anti-virus software on your computer to deter any viruses from stealing your information.

To lock your SSN, follow this link here: https://selfcheck.uscis.gov/SelfCheckUI/ – it will lock your SSN after filling out a form and taking a quiz.
