Tips for Quickly Fixing Your Credit Score

There’s no denying the impact that your credit score has on your life. The better your number, the less you pay for insurance and loans. But, if you’ve got some dings on your record, you need to fix them in order to raise your number. Here are some ways to help you get it higher sooner than later.

  • Don’t have a credit card? Get one! Resisting having a card will only hurt you in the long run. Using one or two for paying a recurring bill can greatly increase your score.
  • Keep credit card use light. Pay off balances as much as possible, and try to use no more than 30 percent of the available balance. The lower the use and the more that is paid off every month is rewarded by a better score.
  • Take that old card out of the drawer and use it from time to time. The longer a line of credit is opened, the better. But an unused card may get closed, which impacts your score.
  • Clean up your credit report. Get copies from all three credit reporting agencies and dispute negative records. Also make sure to contest negative items that you know aren’t yours.
