Prepare Your Paperwork for Your Mortgage

Buying a home can be a long and complicated process. Part of the process is applying for a mortgage, which can take a long time. Keep these 12 tips in mind to ensure you have all the right paperwork to start the process.

  1. Full tax returns from the past two years. You can request copies from the IRS.
  2. Two most recent pay stubs from your employer. Your lender will approve your loan depending on your current salary.
  3. Financial statements from the past two months. These are available from your bank, or you can print them yourself.
  4. Photo ID. Anyone whose name will appear on the loan needs to provide a photo ID.
  5. Proof of homeowners insurance. You will not be able to get a loan if you do not take out an insurance policy.
  6. Written verification of your position and salary. This has to be dated, signed, and written on a company letterhead.
  7. 1099 forms if you are self-employed. These will show the lender how much money you were paid as an independent contractor.
